The company started in Atlanta, Georgia in 1988 as a purveyor of historic outdoor furnishings and "garden whimsies". Founder Robert B. Currey named the company "Garden Source Furniture", later changed to Currey & Company in 1990 to include the lighting aspect of the line.

Stemming from a strong garden decor background, Currey and Company lighting has an organic, natural appeal, made by hand and having a sense of rustic durability.
