Is it easy being green? If Pantone’s choice for color of the year is any indication, the answer in 2017 is a resounding yes. The color authority announced Greenery, “a refreshing and revitalizing shade…symbolic of new beginnings,” as the reigning hue for the coming year.
The Pantone Institute began naming the (now highly anticipated) color of the year back in 2000, and since then has provided a jump-start for a design focus in the year ahead. It is sometimes referred to as the mood, zeitgeist of the moment or even a playful sign-o-the-times and influences everything from fashion trends, interior design and even landscaping choices. Our verdict? It’s a playful, fresh and versatile color that we’re looking forward to seeing more of. Here are six ways to give it a try yourself:
1. Light it up.
Greenery packs a punch and can be perfectly sourced in a light fixture so that you can indulge in the color pop without going overboard. It’s just bold enough – the spectrum ranges from muted and subtle greens, to brighter, more citrusy tones. In a neutral space, you can group mini pendants together. Alternatively, wall sconces or table lamps flanking a bedside or sofa can bring in useful accent or task lighting right where you want it.
2. Make it work.
Another way to work it is to seamlessly incorporate a dose of Greenery freshness into your work space. The right desk accessories bring the color and the function and, if done right, embrace the look naturally without feeling forced. While a desk lamp is an obvious choice, perhaps a timekeeper works better for you. You could even choose some writing utensils and notebooks in this color; this is a smaller color commitment, but grouped together they’ll make a statement and tie in with any other, larger accessories that you might choose.
3. Take it outside.
The human eye can see more shades of green than any other color, so a natural choice for this color is in your outdoor accessory selections. Gardens, patios and sunrooms are ideal for bringing this color to life. Try grouping various sized planters together to make a corner statement or anchor the edge of a patio. Bring in a stool that doubles as an ice bucket and utilize a garden tote as a condiment carryall when it’s not holding your herbs or flowering plants.
4. Sit on it.
Even the most formal of dining rooms wouldn’t suffer with a jolt of this color. Greenery fits right in surrounding a wood or metal dining table. How colorful do you want to go? The style and size of the chair will help determine this for you, but any shade of green brings a fresh vibe to an indoor or outdoor space. You can further coordinate with table linens to anchor the look.
5. Get comfortable.
If you’re already a lover of Greenery and are ready to make a bigger investment in a core furniture piece, this one’s for you! Research has proven that looking at or being surrounded by the color green has a calming and healing effect on the brain. As an alternative to when you can’t actually get outside in the winter months, try some indoor green therapy while lounging.
6. Add art.
One of the easiest ways to incorporate color into your scheme is through art. Whether it is a piece that hangs on the wall or is more of a sculptural item, it’s the ideal way to change up the color vibe in your room without committing to a new full-wall paint job or purchasing all new furniture.
